Description

This PREclipse program collaboration between SPI and the film department at Kenyon College will shine a light on the world of film through stop motion animation.

Students currently in grades 5 and 6 will:

- Be assigned to a "studio" and rotate though various on-set jobs to produce a unique simulation of a total solar eclipse.

- Get introduced to some of the vernacular, equipment, and skills (both creative and technical) that are needed to produce a film.

- Learn the distinguishing characteristics of stop motion as a particular medium.

- Consider the engineering choices that were made in the construction of stop-motion sets to enable the desired results.

- Enjoy pizza, short breaks, and a chance to view each others' work in a 30-seat screening room.

The lead instructor is Lindsey Conant, film production manager at Kenyon. Co-facilitators include Kenyon film students and a Granville High School student whose original creations earned him awards at the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition last year.

In addition to the learning outcomes outlined above, this program is a fun opportunity for socialization and creativity at the start of spring break! The group make up will enable 5th graders to engage with current middle school students who can serve as near-peer guides (or possible new friends) as they approach a milestone developmental phase.

NOTE: For participants to enjoy this program, they need be comfortable working in a team structure with assigned (but rotating) roles. They should expect to maintain a degree of focus in order to compete their studio's production in the time allotted.
